ZAE-Bayern was founded about 25 years ago. It started in 1991 with five departments at the universities of Würzburg, Munich and Erlangen. Today there are two scientific departments, each led by a scientific director and a division manager.
Particular emphasis will be placed on networking these departments and their thematic priorities. This enables the approx. 180 employees to work on an interdisciplinary basis. Through its versatility and networking, ZAE Bayern can contribute to a sustainable, integrated energy system.
The thematic orientation of the Energy Efficiency Division is on the research and development of functional materials for energy technology, related components and systems. Here, the focus is on the development and optimization of materials and highly efficient systems for thermal insulation. This includes in particular vacuum super insulation and high-temperature insulation as well as solar energy systems for daylighting and low-energy architecture. Further fields of activity are the development and optimization of nanoporous carbon aerogels for use in high-temperature thermal insulation systems, the development of low-emitting ceramics and coatings as well as the research and development of organic solar cells and electronics. A broad range of know-how from the fields of new materials, innovative components and thermal management is available.
The research and experimental building at the Würzburg division contains offices, laboratory and technical facilities as well as the necessary infrastructure for the research activities of ZAE Bayern. It was funded as an Energy Efficiency Center by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as well as by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and the State of Bavaria. Its centrepiece is an Information Center, in whose permanent exhibition the subject areas of energy, climate, ecology and resource conservation with a focus on sustainable construction, closed-loop recycling, sustainable consumption and urban development are comprehensively illuminated and made tangible - both for target groups in the research environment and for schools.

Activities in the Garching division focus on the development of innovative storage technologies and their integration into the energy system. One focus is on thermal energy storage technologies. Sensitive, latent and thermochemical storage solutions are developed. In cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, the storage of electrical energy, e. g. in redox-flow batteries, and electrolysis processes for power-to-gas applications are also being investigated. The efficient integration of energy storage systems is accompanied by the topics "solar thermal energy" and "geothermal energy" as well as "heat transformation", e. g. heat pumps or refrigeration machines, and finally by system-analytical considerations. The integration of renewable energy sources and the improvement of energy efficiency through the use of energy storage systems are being investigated in buildings as well as in industrial processes. Dynamic simulations and detailed monitoring support manufacturers and operators of power engineering systems in the planning, design and optimization of their plants. The well-equipped laboratory can offer services ranging from material characterization to component development and the construction of pilot plants.

Intelligent power grids are the focus of research at the Hof site. The aim of the research team is the planning, simulation and optimisation of smart grids on the basis of measured values in the distribution network. At the test centre in Arzberg and in selected power suppy networks of the Epplas/Hof and Schlottenhof/Arzberg districts, the integration of battery and hydrogen storage systems, the modulation of PV performance profiles and the modulation of load profiles by controllable power consumption points are being investigated. In addition to the central acquisition and processing of measurement data, possible control strategies in the system network will also be evaluated.
